The Best Amazon Device Deals for Prime Day 2020: Kindle, Echo, and More (Updated)

Note: Prime Day is over. Check our list of remaining Prime Day deals and deals from the final day of Walmart's sale for the deals that remain. Or read our package of amazing retro tech. As always, we hope we helped you sift through the discounts and find good products.

Amazon's Fire tablets and Echo speakers aren't terribly expensive—they're built to be affordable. Still, Prime Day gives you a chance to buy them for even less. If you need a tablet or want to add Alexa to your house, now is the time to do it. Kindles are another matter. The ebook reader doesn't go on sale as often, which makes these Kindle deals even better.

We've compiled every decent deal on Amazon-branded devices happening from now through the end of Amazon's Prime Day sale (October 13-14). Amazon has a Device Deals page with many of its best deals, but we have the ones we like organized below, with our thoughts and links to our coverage.

Note: We strike through items that sell out or rise in price as we update this guide. Discounts sometimes return quickly, so check for yourself. You'll need a subscription to Amazon Prime to get most of these deals.

Updated October 15: We've cut two Echo deals that are no longer available. Prime Day ends at 11:59 pm Pacific, so there's still some time left to shop.

Echo Speaker Deals

  • Echo Show 5 for $45 ($45 off): This is the best price we've seen on the Echo Show 5, Amazon's smaller smart home display. The same price extends to a version that includes a free one-year subscription to Food Network Kitchen, a service that offers cooking tips and recipes. We reviewed it here.

  • Echo Show 8 for $65 ($65 off): The latest 8-inch Echo Show is sleek and stylish. We like this size more than the 5-inch and 10-inch versions, it's just big enough that weather updates, video chats, and recipes show up clearly, but compact enough that it doesn't take up too much valuable countertop real estate. As with the deal on the Echo 5, be sure to select the option with the free one-year subscription to Food Network Kitchen for access to shows and live cooking classes with Food Network chefs.

  • Echo Show 10-Inch for $150 ($80 off): Amazon's Echo Show has a larger 10-inch screen and enhanced, rear-firing speakers. The Echo 8 screen is a bit nicer, but this one is larger, making it easier to read from across the room.

  • Echo Studio High Fidelity Smart Speaker for $150 ($50 off): Amazon's Studio smart speaker is for the audiophile who wants Alexa, but doesn't want to sacrifice sound quality. It's got 350 watts of power and a downward-firing subwoofer that pumps out more low end than most other speakers this size. It even listens and adjusts the sound to fit your particular space.

  • Echo Flex Plug-In Mini Speaker for $10 ($15 off): The Echo Flex is what we like to call the bathroom speaker. It fits well in any small space in your home where a smart speaker would be overkill, but you still want to make Alexa commands without yelling. There's a USB port on the bottom, which makes a handy place to plug in your phone, or an Amazon-made night light.

  • Mandalorian Echo Dot for $39 ($36 off): Given our collective obsession with Baby Yoda, a creepy, faceless Baby Yoda Echo Dot must have made some sense? Anyway, it's on sale now—if you can stand the wait of three to six months.

Fire Tablet Deals

Amazon's tablets are cheap because they're the company's loss leader for its services, like Kindle Unlimited and Prime Video. We have concerns, especially with the limited selection of apps in Amazon's app store, but overall they're a good deal. Check out our updated guide to deciphering which Amazon Fire tablet is best for you. We did not link to the weaker Fire 7 tablet here. It's also on sale, but we think you should go for the Fire HD 8.

  • Fire HD 10 for $80 ($70 off): The Fire HD 10 is the top of the Fire line. It's faster, has more storage, and has the best screen of the bunch. This deal is on the 32-gigabyte model with ads. The extra fee to remove ads is worth it, to us.

  • Fire HD 8 for $55 ($35 off): The new Fire HD 8 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) has a faster processor and more RAM than previous models. The screen still isn't as nice as the Fire HD 10, but the new, horizontal camera design is better for Echo Show-style use. This deal is on the 32-gigabyte model with ads. The ad-free version is also on sale for $70 ($35 off), and well worth the extra $15.

  • Fire HD 8 Plus for $75 ($35 off): The new Fire HD 8 Plus (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is the Fire HD 8 with 3-gigabytes of RAM instead of two. That doesn't sound like much, but it makes for a smoother experience, particularly when you're juggling multiple apps. It also has wireless charging. As with the other models, the ad-free version is on sale for $90 ($35 off).

  • Fire HD 10 Kids Edition for $130 ($70 off): The best deal on a Fire tablet is this Kids Edition. It's exactly the same as the regular Fire tablets, except you get a rugged case and a two-year worry-free guarantee, which means Amazon will replace the tablet for free if your kids break it. It also comes with one year of Amazon Kids+ (formerly FreeTime Unlimited), offering access to kid-friendly movies, books, games, and apps (Kids+ is $3 per month after the first year).

  • Fire HD 8 Kids Edition for $80 ($60 off): If the Fire HD 10 is too big for your kid, get them this version.

Kindle Deals

Amazon's Kindle pretty much is the digital book market, and for good reason. The company's ebook readers offer more than a month of battery life per charge, the ability to hold thousands of titles, and unlimited book subscriptions. You can even get free books from your local library. Check out our guide to the Best Amazon Kindle.

  • Kindle for $60 ($30 off): The 2019 Kindle (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is still going strong. It's got a 6-inch E Ink capacitive touchscreen (like your phone) for reading, and it lights up so you can read in the dark. The main downsides are it's not water resistant and it still uses a Micro USB charging port. The ad-free version (recommended) is also on sale for $80 ($30 off).

  • Kindle Kid's Edition $75 ($35 off): The Kid's Edition Kindle is new and we like it. The key difference over the regular Kindle is the two-year guaranteed replacement—Amazon will replace it if your kid breaks it. You also get a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, and there are no games, ads, or voice assistants. The downsides are that pictures aren't great on Kindles and it's not waterproof, but with a two-year guaranteed replacement, does it matter?

  • Kindle Paperwhite for $80 ($50 off): The Paperwhite is the Goldilocks Kindle, especially at this price. The display is a step up from the base model, offering better resolution, and the device is rated IPX8 for water resistance, which means you can read in the tub without worry.

  • Kindle Oasis 32-GB for $200 ($80 off): There's really no need for an Oasis—even on sale, it costs more than two Paperwhites—but it's an absolute joy to use. Its LED screen can be adjusted to give off a more pleasant, warm orange glow, which is great for reading at night. And the dedicated page turn buttons are handy for one-handed reading. It's water resistant too. The only real downsides are the larger size and price.

Security Cameras, Wi-Fi, and Other Deals

We have serious reservations about Amazon's Ring and Blink camera systems. But if you're all in on home surveillance and would like to know more, check out our original Ring doorbell review and our roundup of smart doorbells.

  • Blink Mini Security Camera Two-Pack for $50 ($15 off): We haven't tested this camera, but at this price, it's hard to go too wrong. Just keep in mind that Blink is owned by Amazon and all your footage is stored in the cloud. For other options, have a look at our best indoor security cameras.

  • Ring Stick Up Cam for $80 ($60 off): The nice thing about the Stick Up cam is that you don't have to drill holes into your walls. If you're a Prime member, you get a third-gen Echo Dot for free (that's the last-gen model).

  • Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Echo Show 5 for $150 ($20 off): If you want to dive headfirst in the smart home world, this deal gives you everything you need to get started monitoring your doorstep.

  • Eero Mesh Wi-Fi System 3-Pack for $174 ($76 off): Our reviews editor, Jeffrey Van Camp, purchased this system earlier this summer for $250. We've seen it at $160 before, but it's rarely this low. If you have a larger house, or your internet modem is in a corner of it and you have trouble getting stable Wi-Fi everywhere, Eero is an easy fix. You just place the three nodes (or add more) in different zones of your house to stitch together a more stable Wi-Fi network. If you want to extend an existing Eero system, you can grab the Beacon extender for $104 ($45 off).

  • Echo Auto for $20 ($30 off): If you miss Alexa when you're out driving then this is the device for you. The price is at its lowest, and you get a free one-year subscription to Amazon Music Unlimited. Just be sure to cancel it before it automatically renews. Do you really need Alexa in your car though?

Amazon Service Deals

  • Get a $10 credit for Prime Day when you spend $10 at Whole Foods: Spend $10 in-store or online via Prime Now at Whole Foods between now and October 14, and you'll get $10 credit to redeem on Amazon.com on Prime Day. This makes sense if you plan to go grocery shopping there anyway.

  • 6-Month Kindle Unlimited Membership for $30 ($30 off): Kindle Unlimited gets you access to millions of Kindle ebooks for free. The service usually costs $10 per month, which is the rate it will renew after your membership runs out. You may want to set a reminder on your phone to cancel so you aren't charged. You can read Kindle books on your phone or computer using the free Kindle app.
